Small Three Drawer Side Table

William Morris famously said, "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." Tanja Hinder and Lauren Bugliarisi of Vancouver-based design firm Marrimor take this notion to heart. And while they've been focused on interiors for years—custom-designing multipurpose furniture pieces for their projects that look as good as they function—it's their recently launched product arm Marrimor Objects that would perhaps enamor Morris the most.

"Our interiors work gives us insight into the way that people live and interact with the objects in their home," Tanja says. "At our cores, we are both problem solvers, and product design gives us the opportunity to look at the world and ask, What would make people's lives a little more functional and a little more beautiful, and then actually make it happen." Enter Toof & Toss, their debut collection—Toof, part table and part pouf; and Toss, two-sided cushions in square and lumbar configurations. They both exemplify Marrimor's mantra: "nice things for nonconformists." Their materials and color palettes are so bold and unexpected that they read super-playful and modern. Think nubby bouclés, handsome tweeds, fluffy faux fur, cozy alpaca and wool, sumptuous velvets, and luxe linen and mohair in super-saturated tones like mustard yellow, lipstick red, deep plum, and vibrant teal. But their soft shapes and textures make them feel at home in more traditional settings as well.

The Toof's double duty in action.

A closer look at the Toof reveals its duality, as the plush ottoman can stand on its own or snuggle into a sleek powder-coated steel frame that serves as a table—its shape inspired by the pull top of a vintage soda can. Need more seating? Done. Need a side table in the living room or a nightstand by your bed? Voilà. It saves space in a smaller room as a two-in-one piece, but it's substantial enough to work in a more sizable interior, separately or together. Bonus: The tables (when used alone) are outdoor-friendly.

"There was something about the challenge of creating a product that served a dual purpose but was as beautiful as it was functional that appealed to us deeply as designers and problem solvers," says Lauren. "We were working on a project at the time where we were looking for a way to tuck away an occasional seat or footstool in an intentional and design-minded way and the idea snowballed from there. It occurred to us that the same need we saw in that specific instance was likely to apply to many other people and their homes."

And, in a final act of problem-solving prowess, the design duo offered their answer to sustainability. "From a broader perspective, we want to create products that work so well for the people who use them that they keep them for many years to come," says Tanja. "We have no interest in contributing to the fast furniture market. By doubling an object's functionality, we hope it halves its risk of ending up in the landfill."
