[GUIDE] : Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – How To Play Split Screen Multiplayer

It's not immediately obvious, but one of the coolest things available in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the ability to take advantage of its split-screen multiplayer offerings. This means you can share a TV with a friend and the two of you dive into Cold War multiplayer from the comfort of the same couch.

But while it's nice to have the split-screen option for more than just private matches, enabling local split-screen isn't entirely obvious in the Cold War. There are also some caveats for using the mode on consoles. Specifically, if you want to play split-screen online, you'll need two Xbox Live Gold accounts or two PlayStation Network accounts. Don't expect split screen to be a solution to bypass online subscription fees for console makers.

Here's everything you need to know to set up split screen for online and local play on consoles, in all modes of Cold War.

Step 1: Connect to a second controller

Before you jump into the Cold War, you'll need a second controller. On the second controller, sign in to an account on your console. On PlayStation or Xbox console families, you can sign in with a guest account, rather than an account linked to PSN or Xbox Live. This will work in some variations of the multiplayer mode, but note that you cannot use a guest account to play online – use one you restrict to local play.

If you want to play online, be sure to sign in to an Xbox Live or PSN account on the second controller. You should also note that you'll need a separate Activision account to play online, which you can set up or sign in when you load up Cold War.

Step 2: set your focus

Cold War lets you adjust your split screen settings, orienting the split either horizontally (so the two screens are stacked on top of each other) or vertically (so they're side by side). You can adjust between the two in the graphics settings menu, so check it out before you engage in a multiplayer game and find yourself disoriented.

Step 3: switch between online and offline

When you get to the Cold War main menu, you'll see options to play Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and Dead Ops Arcade. At the bottom of the screen is the information you're looking for: the setting that toggles between online and offline play. You should be able to toggle that with just one button on your controller.

Go offline and you can load up in any multiplayer lobby of your choice, one that cannot be filled with other players on the internet. In offline mode, you can play split screen against another player using a guest account on your console.

Step 4: Head to the lobby

Either way, once you're in a multiplayer lobby, look for a prompt on the right side of the screen telling you how to log in for a split screen. Just like switching between online and offline, a push of a button should switch to split screen. This will also automatically add the player from the second controller to your in-game party.

If you're looking for an online game, the rest of your lobby should fill up normally once you've chosen the type of match you want to face (and in Zombies, once you've started the storyline). In the local game, you will load directly into the game, but of course it will be a bit empty.

Call Of Duty Black OPS Cold War How To Play Two On The Same Screen On The Same Console (Local Co-op)

Call of Duty series console players are used to being able to share the same game console for multiplayer or zombie split-screen and local sessions. The game "Call of Duty Black OPS Cold War" integrates the function well to be able to add a second joystick and therefore play with a friend or a member of his family with a screen cut in two (splitscreen). However, there are some things you need to know about it with the recent launch of the new Call of Duty Black OPS Cold War on PS4, Xbox One and the new game consoles, Xbox Series and the PS5. If you haven't yet figured out how you can play with two players on the same screen and the same game console in multiplayer and zombie modes, then we'll explain everything you need to know below.

Can two players play on the same screen and the same console (local co-op) in Call of Duty Black OPS Cold War?

The answer is yes, but only since version 1.04 of the game! Split-screen mode which allows you to play locally with a friend or family member has only been enabled in-game since this update. If you haven't installed this patch on your game, you will need to do so to be able to play locally co-op on the same screen otherwise you won't be able to add a second controller to split the screen in half. It goes without saying that the Call of Duty Black OPS Cold War campaign cannot be shared with a friend or family member since it is a campaign intended for one player only.

Play split screen in multiplayer modes:

After downloading the latest game update, you can add a second controller while in the multiplayer lounge. It will simply be necessary to connect a second profile in addition to the main player to be able to play. This split-screen mode works on PS4, Xbox One, or even Xbox Series and PS5. Note that PS5 players must have two DualSense controllers. It is not possible to play the PS5 version of Call of Duty Black OPS Cold War with a Dualshock 4.

Play split screen in zombie modes:

Since the last patch (1.04) of Call of Duty Black OPS Cold War, it is possible to add a second joystick in zombies mode. Unfortunately there seems to be an issue currently preventing players from initiating a game when a second controller is added. Indeed, as soon as two players meet locally in the zombie mode lounge, it is not possible to start a game. We will certainly have to wait for a second patch that will correct this little problem.

How to remove black bands in split screen in Call of Duty Black OPS Cold War:

This is a problem specific to the games of the Call of Duty license and more particularly to Treyarch's games, "Black OPS". As soon as two players are on the same screen, part of the surface is lost which is filled with black bands. It is unfortunately not possible to remove these black bands … Note however that you can change the direction in which the screen is cut in the options, you can switch from horizontal to vertical mode. Open the game settings, go to the "graphics" tab and switch the orientation mode of the split screen to the dedicated line.

Black Ops Cold War – How to Play Split Screen

Split-screen multiplayer dates back to the old days of gaming, with games like Goldeneye really popularizing it. While this still exists over the years, the advent of online gaming has really started to minimize this option in many games. There were even some major shooters that came out like Halo 5: Guardians that didn't offer split screen at all. One of the biggest games of the whole year has now been released with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and the good news is that split screen is included in a few different modes.

How to play split screen

For those hoping to run through the story campaign with a friend in split-screen action, sadly that won't happen in this year's game as it is a single player experience. However, there are still many options for in-game split screen multiplayer available both online and offline.

From the game's regular multiplayer mode, you can choose split screen. The default multiplayer option is to play online with other people, but you can actually ask a friend to have fun online with you through the split screen. It's very easy to do too, because you just have to start by going to the main multiplayer menu. When you're there, just turn on your second controller and press X on PS5 or the corresponding button on other platforms. This will instantly start the split screen making it nice and easy. It works exactly the same in Zombies, just by going to the Zombies menu rather than multiplayer.

If you want to get old school and do some local split screen multiplayer without taking the game online, you can always do it with a friend. To do this, go into multiplayer mode as before and this time scroll down to the Custom Games option. Once in this menu, you can do the same as before to add another player via the split screen by pressing X on the second controller. At this point you can join the game and will be one on one unless you add bots.

Not only can you create a split screen in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, but you can also customize the setup you want. Regardless of which mode menu you are in or whether you are in the main menu, you can press the equivalent of the start button, the Option button on PS5, to open the game settings. Press R1 to open the game settings. scroll to the second tab for graphics, then scroll to the option Split screen orientation, where you can choose to set it as horizontal or vertical. Take your pick and it will be set to that the next time you play.
